The weather where you sail — even when the connection is gone

Weather on the chart

Wind, waves and current as colours across the chart

Turn the weather on and the chart is coloured by wind strength, wave height or current, with colours that blend into each other and particles that move with the wind. Drag the timeline and watch the weather develop over the next three days, hour by hour.

The forecasts come from DMI's own models: wind from HARMONIE at 2.5 km resolution, waves from WAM and current from DKSS. AYLO downloads them in the background, an area several hundred kilometres around the boat, so the weather is there when you need it, even without internet or 4G. With no connection, AYLO shows the latest forecast and when it is from. A slightly older forecast is better than none.

  • Wind, waves and current, each with its own colour scale
  • 72 hours ahead, hour by hour
  • Stored on AYLO and works without coverage
  • Wind, waves and current for the chosen time also appear in the instrument bar
The forecast

Hour by hour, where the boat is

The forecast follows the boat: temperature, rain, wind and gusts hour by hour, with sunrise and sunset, air pressure, visibility and a short description of the day. You can also look up a marina and see the forecast there before you sail.

At the top are the navigational warnings near you, for example an unlit lighthouse or a buoy that is not lit, with position and distance from the boat. The forecast is stored on AYLO, so it can still be read when the connection is lost.

  • Temperature, rain, wind and gusts hour by hour
  • Navigational warnings near the boat
  • The latest forecast is stored and readable without internet

Route planning

Routes that take wind and current into account — especially for sailing boats

When AYLO suggests a route, the weather forecasts are used actively. The route still follows the chart's depths, seamarks and traffic separation schemes, but within safe water it picks the way that is fastest with the wind and current actually expected, where the boat is, when it is there.

For a sailing boat AYLO works out the boat's speed from the wind strength and the angle to the wind. Legs that go upwind are counted as beats, and in very light wind the boat is assumed to motor. Current counts for every boat: with the current is faster, against it is slower, and across the course it costs speed.

The route suggestion tells you the expected sailing time with wind and current and how many legs must be beaten. The calculation runs on AYLO on board, so it works without internet too.

  • The fastest way with wind and current, not just the shortest
  • Sailing speed from wind strength and angle, beating upwind
  • Expected sailing time and the legs to beat
  • Depths, hazards and traffic separation always come first
Under way

AYLO recalculates the route when the weather or the current changes

The forecast changes, the wind veers and the current pushes the boat off course. While you follow a route, AYLO automatically recalculates the rest of the trip with one tap: from where the boat actually is, with the latest wind and current forecast and the drift you have had along the way.

The new route is laid out side by side with the current one: distance, sailing time, expected arrival, legs to beat and number of waypoints. Both routes are calculated with the same forecast, so the figures can be compared directly, and AYLO tells you whether the new one is faster or shorter.

You choose whether to use the new route. The trip's start time and distance travelled carry over, and if the autopilot is steering by the route, AYLO tells you before the route changes.

  • From the boat's actual position — also when it has drifted off course
  • With the latest wind and current forecast
  • Distance, sailing time and arrival for both routes side by side
  • The route only changes when you choose it

Wind, waves and current are forecasts from DMI (the Danish Meteorological Institute, CC BY 4.0). Wind and waves cover the Bay of Biscay to northern Norway, current the North Sea, the English Channel, the Kattegat, the Danish straits and the Baltic. A forecast is a forecast: always follow the official warnings, and it is always the skipper's responsibility to sail safely.
